What does good emotional wellbeing look like in a child?

A child who is mentally healthy is a child who feels happy about themselves. They are able to get along well with family and friends, enjoy being included, are able to manage negative feelings and bounce back. Children that also exercise regularly and have a balanced diet are also more likely to have a healthy mindset.

What affects their emotional wellbeing?

There are many factors and it is not always certain why a child may develop mental issues. However, children are vulnerable to traumatic events. Big changes may also cause a change in a child's emotional wellbeing. These changes include: a new sibling, moving homes, death of a loved one, starting school and other new experiences.

For teenagers, the transition to adulthood may have a big impact on their mental health. Many are at a time where they are figuring out and trying to accept themselves.

How you can support your child

A positive relationship between parents or another close person and a child has a very positive effect. Spending time to talk, listen, show love, activities they enjoy and some ways to build a positive relationship. Talking about emotions and being supportive when your child is in need are also great ways to develop your child's awareness of their own emotions.
